As you know, resins secreted from trees or plants come of  different types. Medical experts have discovered that this thick and sticky  substance secreted from plants has no use for the plant itself. Thus the reason  why this phenomenon takes place is still unknown to the world. But from the  time this substance was known to man, it has been manipulated for many useful  purposes. Apart from being used in paints, resins have its purpose in medicines  too as a bulk chemical supplied to Africa by chemical traders in Dubai.

A variety of trees produce resin. And each variety has a  slight difference in the resins they secrete. Resin in frankincense has been  used since ages. The Egyptians in the olden times would grind it to a powder  and use it as eyeliner for its healing properties. Frankincense in the form of  a pill is popularly used today as medicine for various diseases. It has been  known to have inflammatory properties. In Africa, it is also used in aroma  therapy to release stress and anxiety.

After resin from  the bark of the Boswellia tree was found in India, the following study was  conducted by the Arthritis Foundation:-
  In a 2004 study, Indian frankin­cense was  tested as a treatment for knee OA. Researchers recruited 30 people with knee OA  and gave half the group a daily supplement containing 333 mg of Indian frank­in­cense;  others got placebo.
